Our con­trol­lers employ the stand­ard Bluetooth pro­tocol RFCOMM, which is unlike the L2CAP pro­tocol (which is used by Play­Sta­tion 3 and XBOX con­trol­lers for instance) sup­por­ted by all mod­ern smart­phones of today. There­fore Phone­joys work in the­ory on nearly all Android mobile phones*, even those such as HTC and Sam­sung phones which usu­ally face prob­lems with other con­trol­lers such as the Nin­tendo Wiimote. No root/jailbreak is required in most cases.

Every Phone­joy Ana­log comes with 14 But­tons (D-PAD, Select, Start, Cross, Tri­angle, Square, Circle, L1, R1, L2, R2) sim­ilar to that of the ori­ginal Play­Sta­tion con­trol­ler. The Phone­joy responses without any notice­able delay, and range can be depend­ing on your device up to sev­eral meters. Every Phone­joy comes with an internal Lithium-ion bat­tery which can be charged through the sup­plied mini­USB cable. The bat­tery usu­ally lasts sev­eral days of mod­er­ate gam­ing and has a life­time of sev­eral years.

On top of that the con­trol­ler is sup­plied with a stand that can be used to hold your mobile phone. For Tab­lets we recom­mend buy­ing a big­ger and stur­dier stand, however.

Using the RFCOMM Bluetooth pro­tocol Phone­joys con­nect to mobile devices via the Serial Port Pro­file (SPP), which is sup­por­ted on Android by the Bluez-IME app that is avail­able on the Android Mar­ket and on Win­dows PCs by our soft­ware, which is avail­able to down­load on our site. Bluez-IME allows a gamepad exper­i­ence with all apps that sup­port Android’s Input Method Editor (IME). Our gamepad is com­pat­ible with more than 100 Android games such as GTA III, Shad­ow­gun, Samurai II, Riptide, Sonic CD and Zeno­nia 4 and many more. Phone­joy, too, sup­ports plenty of known emu­lat­ors such as Game­boy Color A.D., FPse, Super­GNES, John NES, MAME4droid, GEN­Plus­Droid, Mupen64Plus and N64oid among many oth­ers.

Bluez-IME can also emu­late Xperia Play’s gamepad con­trols which in the­ory should grant Phone­joy access for more than 200 Xperia Play sup­por­ted games. The sup­port of such is not fully developed at this stage yet how­ever. It is expec­ted that in the com­ing months more and more games will emerge that sup­port wire­less gamepads such as the Phonejoy.

Phone­joy has been tested with:

*Accord­ing to our know­ledge,  LG-branded & some older Motorola Android phones use a very basic Bluetooth stack, which makes usage of Bluetooth devices other than head­sets impossible unless the phone is rooted and flashed with a cus­tom ROM. This may change with future phone ver­sions. How­ever, we ask LG phone users to buy Phone­joys only with cau­tion to pre­vent any hassle involved with the installation.
